Ellie Magnett (L), celebrates her overtime in the badgers 3-2 win over Walden Grove.

Ellie Magnett's goal decides it

The Prescott Badgers needed an overtime to beat a very good Walden Grove Red Wolves team 3-2 in overtime. The win sets up a semifinal game at Williams Field High School in Gilbert, on Saturday at 1pm. The opponent will be Catalina Foothills, who pounded Mingus 8-0.

It took an Ellie Magnett goal with 8:54 left in overtime to score what would turn out to be the game winning goal for the top team in Division 4.

Coming into the quarterfinal match up, Prescott coach Paul Campuzano knew this would be a battle. "That is a good team over there. They (Walden Grove) are the biggest and most physical team we have faced up to this point. Our girls actually play better when being pushed in that direction."

The game was very physical, with players on both teams going down hard to the turf throughout the contest.

The Badgers took a 1-0 with 14:23 to play in the first half on a goal by Kari Kasun. Lily Jensen provided the assist, and Prescott held that 1-0 lead at the half.

Kari Kasun provide the assist for an Emma Alvarez goal with 18:13 left in the second half. Prescott led 2-0 until Walden Grove got their goose egg off the board.

The Red Wolves scored two goals that were the result of a defensive breakdown according to coach Campuzano. "We have not made those kind of mistakes all season, and these cost us, but the girls kept it together, and got the win."

Taylor Lansky scored off a corner kick with 16:27 on the clock to cut the Badgers lad in half at 2-1. Meredith Scott took advantage up the middle to tie the game at two with 3:10 remaining.

After the win Kari Kasun said, "We fought hard and had to play that way the entire time." Asked about Walden Grove tying the game, "I try not to focus on the score. We play as a team and we will play hard for the entire game."

Ellie Magnett said, "This was a team win. We really wanted this game since this was our last one at home. It got physical and we would not back down. We wanted to make sure we went further than last season.

Prescott is now (17-0-1), after giving up two goals in a game for only the second time this season. Walden Grove ends their season at (11-6-2).
