The rivalry energy was seen throughout the Badger Dome last night as Prescott Badgers came out firing on Senior Night, with a hard fought 58-54 win in the Badger Dome last night.
The Badgers jumped all over the Bears early, and after Jason Parent's back to back threes, it was 11-2 Badgers 3:46 in the opening quarter.
Carter John and the Bradshaw Mountain Bears got it together to pull within four at 17-13 after one. The Prescott lead was dwindled to 18-16 early into the second quarter, but Bradshaw could not catch the Badgers. Prescott fought back to build their lead to 25-16 on three point shots by Jacob Carter and Milap Owens.
Korey Schwartz was a force inside, picking up the garbage many times with baskets off of offensive rebounds. Schwartz did just that for a 27-20 lead. Collin Hicks came off the bench and played a tough game, with the primary example of scrambling for a loose ball. The effort fired up the home crowd and his team mates.
The Bears did make a comeback to 27-24, before Schwartz converted a free throw for a 28-24 Badger lead at the half.
Schwartz had another rebound and put back for a 32-28 Prescott lead. The lead grew to 40-34 when Parent picked a bear pocket a glided to the hoop. The Badgers lead 44-38 after three quarters.
The intensity revved up in the final eight minutes. After a basket by Tripp Nestor of the Bears, Korey Schwartz trucked his was down the baseline for a power slam, with the crowed erupting in the process, and a 46-42 Badger lead. Parent hit a jumper for a six point advantage, but Carter John nailed a three to cut the Bears deficit to 48-45.
Dellin Boyd knocked down a three with just under two minutes to play for a 52-45 lead. Bradshaw Mountain was not done yet. Carter John scored and stole the ball, dishing to Nate Summit who was fouled and made one of two from the line to trim the Badger lead to 54-52 with :44 to play.
The Badgers were able to make some free throws by Boyd, Schwartz, and a pair by Parent to lead 58-52 with :12 remaining.
Carter John led all scorers with 22. Jason Parent led the Badgers with 16. Korey Schwartz had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Badger coach Travis Stedman said, "Honestly, we got a few stops and we made our free throws, which made a huge difference in a game like this. Beating our rival ten miles down the road on senior night, it is going to be easy to sleep tonight."
When asked about the coaches take on the year in one sentence, Stedman replied, "This season we have struggled to finish games, but tonight we finished."
Prescott improved to (6-5) in the Grand Canyon Region and (7-13) overall. The Badgers will close out their season on Tuesday at Mohave. Bradshaw Mountain (7-5) and (14-11), will play their regular season finale with a non-region contest at home versus Desert Edge.
