Update: Both lanes are now open.
PHOENIX – A rock slide forced the closure of Interstate 17 southbound at milepost 252 near Sunset Point, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. This is expected to be an extended closure.
Consider delaying travel or use an alternate route.
I-17 has a history of unstable slope issues in this area.
Alternate routes are suggested. Please be aware that these routes can add a hour or more to your travel time, so you will want to plan accordingly.
From Prescott: AZ-89 S to US-93 S to US-60. From there, you can head directly into Phoenix, or you can take AZ-74 E to I-17 to reach the Northern Phoenix metro area.
From Flagstaff or Camp Verde: State Route 260 eastbound from Camp Verde to State Route 87 southbound at Payson.
Note: Northbound I-17 is open.
Real-time highway conditions are available on ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, by calling 511 and through ADOT’s Twitter feed,@ArizonaDOT.
When a freeway closure or other major traffic event occurs, our free app available at ADOTAlerts.com will send critical information directly to app users in affected areas – where possible, in advance of alternate routes.
