On January 30, 2019, deputies met with a theft victim who resides in Kirkland. She explained that her daughter sent her a pre-paid Wal Mart Gift card in the amount of $25.00 back in December and it was never received. With assistance of a Wal Mart online application, the victim’s daughter was able to find out the gift card had been used at the Wal Mart on Gail Gardner in Prescott.
The reporting deputy contacted Wal Mart security and was able to obtain a photo of a female using the stolen card at the Gail Gardner store. The photo was shown to the victim and a family member and they identified the suspect as 56-year-old Lavada Pierce, the local mail carrier.
The following day, a YCSO deputy conducted a traffic stop on Pierce in Kirkland. It was learned Pierce is a substitute contract mail carrier.
When confronted, Pierce denied obtaining the gift card from the mail. She eventually admitted using the card believing it had been sent to the post office as a thank you. Based on the investigation to date, the deputy determined Pierce would be charged for Theft, Fraudulent Use of a Credit Card, Theft of Credit Card and Fraud. She was arrested and booked into the Camp Verde Detention Center. She was released the next day on a promise to appear.
US Postal Service law enforcement was notified and is conducting an investigation. The inspector has indicated Pierce may be a suspect in additional thefts and use of stolen gift cards.
