You've heard him as a voice on KQNA and KPPV radio stations; he's the emcee for many events at Yavapai College and the Access 13 Awards presentation; he announces sports games. But now, you're about to find out if Ken Byers can spell, as he participates in a spelling bee - out loud - on stage - in front of everyone!
Yep, Byers has been asked to be the Celebrity Speller in the Broadway play, "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" performing here on Thursday night, December 11. Byers explained his role, stating, "I'm going to be the Celebrity Guest Speller. When they get around to the spelling bee part of the play, they'll call me up on stage. I'm not playing a character, I'm playing myself, but I'll be the celebrity guest speller and I get to stay in the play as long as I spell correctly."
Byers laughed as he said, "I actually have to spell! And they're not giving me the words ahead of time. It could be the shortest performance in acting history. I need some tutor work!"
"It'll be fun," he continued, grinning. "It's a great play. We saw a play several years back when they played at Gammage down in Phoenix. It's a good play. People will love it. It's just the one night."
So, how did Byers end up being the chosen one? "They just asked me to do it. I've done emceeing for Yavapai College in the past, and for Access 13, I'm the emcee of their Award Show each year. They know I've got a nutty sense of humor, although I'm not supposed to really bring that. I'm supposed to be myself."
