Sales, Menus & Recipes: Time to Start Prepping for Thanksgiving
Featured

31 October 2018

After Halloween comes Thanksgiving. Yikes!

Well—Halloween is almost over. See Bonus recipes for a couple of things you might still want to make. But it’s time to start planning for Thanksgiving. Thursday November 22 is only three weeks away, so what can you do now?

First of all you need to know how many people are coming and what dietary restrictions they may have. Some vegetarians eat eggs and cheese, and some don’t. Vegans don’t, and many don’t eat honey either.

Get your invitations out soon. Remember that even grown kids and others who usually come to your home appreciate being invited.

Now what else can you do this week. This depends on how much freezer space you have. Do you like to make your own pies? Have you ever frozen your own pie shells? It’s easy, just remember to wrap carefully to keep freezer moisture and odors out.

Much shopping can be done early. Making pumpkin pies? Sprouts canned pumpkin is on sale this week for $1/can. Do you use french cut green beans or pearl onions? Get them now; if you wait the stores may be out by Thanksgiving week. Check your herbs and spices. Replace any that smell like hay or have lost their fresh ground smell. Sprouts carries many items in their bulk spices including dried porcini and shiitake mushrooms. Are you low on flour, sugar, chicken stock, molasses, potatoes, onions or bacon (can be frozen.) Avocados will keep very well in the cold drawer of your refrigerator. They will ripen slowly. Check a week or so before Thanksgiving and take them out if they are still a little hard.

Just remember, anything you can do now will be something that doesn’t have to be done at the last minute.

We will continue with more suggestions next week.
