Sales, Menus & Recipes: It's Apple Season
Featured

14 September 2018

Apple season is here!

New Feature This Week: Screamin' Deals

Because there are also amazing deals in non-food items, we are going to start featuring some of the best each week. They will appear under the “Special Sales” sections. This might include a food item not used in any of our recipes or deals at stores other than the three major groceries.

Starting this week we will be exploring apples, old and new. We’ll consider the special qualities and best purposes of some of the many varieties currently available. Because the season for apples runs from August to November, we will concentrate on the varieties in the markets as they become available.

This Week’s Featured Apple

Honeycrisp—One of the best of the “new” apples, medium sweetness, crisp texture, holds together well when cooked, browns very slowly. Honeycrisp is a product of the University of Minnesota apple breeding program.

Recipe: Pasta Salad

Amounts will vary depending on how many people you are feeding.
For 4 servings:
2 cups cooked and cooled whole wheat rotini (or other small shaped pasta) You can cook ahead and keep refrigerated if you stir in a Tablespoon or so of olive oil.
2 cups torn lettuce (romaine or butter, or leaf etc.)
1/4 cup torn baby arugula or spinach or fresh basil
1 cup kalamata olives
1/2 cup shredded carrot or radicchio
1/4 cup shredded parmesan cheese
Olive oil and Balsamic vinegar
In a medium bowl, mix pasta, greens and shredded carrot. Spread olives on top. Pass cheese, oil and vinegar for each person to dress as they choose.
This can also be made as individual composed salads. Use whatever olives or marinated vegetables you have on hand. For a more substantial lunch or brunch salad add shredded cooked chicken or cubed deli turkey or ham.
